L&R's nursery is the home for some 2000
different orchid species and varieties amassed
over the past 20 or so years. We obtained
these plants from numerous sources world
wide and many were raised from seed. From
these we have selected plants showing superior
flower qualities and vigour for further propagation.
For many years now I have been conscious
of the benefits, to nature and orchid enthusiasts,
of propagating orchid species from seed,
tissue culture and division.Producing species
from seed has been my main interest - from
selected clones sepecially. From these we
are getting plants with flowers of more desirable
from and color. Now this has greater importance.
With the advent of CITES regulations (Convention
for International Trade in Endangered Species)
and a general feeling of urgency not only
for consevation of orchid species but other
plant and wildlife which are under threat
of extinction, particulary from deforestation
and habitat destruction.
The laboratory which is now doing all of
our flask work is producing fine results
with bottles of husky seedlings and interesting
species becoming available.
Species orchids have a certain distinctiveness
of fascination often lost in hybrids. If
